Ye olde Rye in August 2021

I thought I would try something new and Rye in Sussex hits the spot, it's full of history. As a tourist trap parking is key, which means that all the car parks are full, they have about seven car parks, and you have to pay for all of them from £2 to £5 all day. Best to pick a car park near the town centre, or you will be walking miles. There is a very good hot chocolate shop called Knoops, but there is always a queue and best to make your mind up on what you want as there are about 80 different combinations of chocolate.

There are many interesting things from a Small Castle, Smuggling, Rye high street, shops, tourist prices (Eating is expensive!), Church, etc... You can go up the church tower in £4, but I was in a skirt and some areas were claustrophobic and cramped. I gave that a miss. They still had signs saying that you must have a mask on, I left mine in the car (Doh!), but I couldn't buy one any ware, even Boots store in the high street. If they want people to wear them, they must supply them! The roads and path are manly cobbled, so any high heels are a no!

You can go into the Ypres Castle for also £4, there was a very informative man giving instructions and a map, it's quite a small castle, took me about fifteen minutes to go around the whole thing.

You can view one side of the castle at the top, but not up on the main section, so the view is limited. There is the first woman's tower/prison in the grounds, as the men were kept in the Castle.

There are many shops, the majority is selling nick knacks like healing stones, the old-fashioned sweet shop caught my eye, I wonder why! Again for tourists, as are the restaurants and pubs.

After Rye, I took a tour to Camber Sands, Dungeness and Old Romney. Nice to see the Sea again, didn't go for a dip, too cold! Went to see the two lighthouses at Dungeness, you can go up one, but it was closed. There are many new buildings from the last time I was there, hardly recognized the place.

On the way back home, I stopped off at St. Clement's Church, Old Romney,  it was originally constructed in the 12th century, although there is some evidence of an original structure on the site dating back to the 8th century.  Its grade 1 listed and painted pink inside.

The christening font was covered, I wonder if that was to do with witches as the same as Rolvenden Church, taking the holy water. There was only an old couple outside, so I had the whole church to myself.  On the way back I stopped off at Tenterden for some Fish and Chips, must have been the salty air of the coast, not the best chips I have to say. Must have changed hands since the last time I was there.

Overall a good day out, and it didn't rain!
