Sir Winston Churchill - Chartwell

Published on 13 September 2021 at 10:23

I wasn't sure on the weather due to Weather Storm Freya, but I took a chance and decided to visit the home of Sir Winston Churchill, I was actually surprised that he choose the location due to the Luftwaffe attacking London which is not far, he must have hated those doodlebugs! The house sits in the lovely countryside.

Chartwell was the much-loved Churchill family home from 1922 and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration until the end of his life. The rooms remain much as they were when he lived here, with pictures, books and personal mementos evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of a great statesman, writer, painter, and family man. Additionally, every winter, we put on a new temporary exhibition to explore Churchill in more detail and draw items out of storage.

The hillside gardens reflect Sir Winston’s love of the landscape and nature. They include the lakes he created, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse designed for his youngest daughter Mary. Beyond the gardens, there is an expanse of woodland with looped trails and natural play areas. There's den building, a Canadian camp, and opportunities to stretch your legs. Watch out for Jock the cat!

The car park could do with improvement due to stones and uneven surfaces, especially if wearing heels. If you are not a member of the National Trust you will have to pay £4 at the ticket machine which you have to give the right change, or you can pay at the office which cost me £3.50, the nice man tried to sell me National Trust membership, which does make sense, but there are only so many Houses and Gardens you can visit.
